Happy at Home: Tips to Create a DIY Spa Day

It’s hard to beat a day of relaxation at your local spa - but unfortunately, regular visits just aren’t feasible for many of us.

Don’t let these limitations deter you, though. Making time for self-care is a crucial aspect of wellness, and sometimes, we just need to get a little creative.

In fact, it’s easier than you might think to create a rewarding spa day experience at your very own home. While getting the house to yourself might be a rare thing, we’ve got some advice for making the most of your time when it actually does happen.

And unlike with a professional spa setting, you’re free to customize your own experience as much as you want - so check out the tips below and start planning your day of bliss!

Eliminate Distractions

Try a modern version of a timeless retreat by creating boundaries that remove distraction and use sweet, nourishing attention to details to transform your home into a spa. Do this by creating auto-messages in email and especially on SMS to address all incoming correspondence letting your community know you are in a self-care ritual for a specific amount of time. Prepare some alkaline water with lemon, cucumber, or mint and have it on hand so the body is hydrated and cued to relax.

Set the Stage for a Relaxing Day

Setting and ambiance are the most crucial aspects to transform your home into a spa and wellness retreat. You need to create your own special corner of your home where your soul can just “be” – a place that reflects your true self and shuts out all distractions. Take some time to decorate your space accordingly, turn on your favorite chill music and essential oils, and start your spa day with a 10-minute meditation.

Start Engaging Your Senses

Grab yourself a diffuser and pair it with 100% pure essential oil that has the benefits and natural aroma you need - check out this guide for help with finding the right scent. Or, go the candle route to pick a fragrance for the mood. Musky, vanilla-like scents, tend to give a feeling of warmth, while floral scents can provide a feeling of well-being. Match the candle size to the room size. For example, 3-wick candles will work in larger rooms but may be overpowering for a small space. Go natural with a soy-based candle that never gives a petroleum-like smell as some paraffin candles will do.

Prepare Your Bath

Now it’s time to get the water flowing. Prepare a luxurious bath setting by adding Epsom salts or bath oils, lining the tub with candles, and consider throwing in some fresh flower petals for a touch of elegance. Don't forget to have a fluffy towel and robe waiting for you when you step out. For a standard-sized bathtub with Epsom salts, we recommend soaking for around 30 minutes.

Give Yourself a Facial

Sink into skin care with a DIY facial, either while you’re in the bath or right after you get out. Create a customized facial experience at home by boiling water, adding 3-4 drops of essential oil, and draping a towel over your head to clear pores and breathe easier. Add two different oils to make your own signature blend. Try spearmint and eucalyptus for sinuses and stress, bergamot and cedarwood for relaxation, or tea tree and geranium for healthy skin.

Show Your Skin More Love

Give your skin even more TLC by exfoliating and moisturizing. Create a homemade scrub using ingredients like sugar and coconut oil, or use a store-bought exfoliating mask. Follow up with a hydrating face mask or a soothing sheet mask to give your skin a healthy glow.

Indulge in Self-Care

Continue providing yourself with luxurious self-care treatments such as a manicure and pedicure. Soak your hands and feet in warm water, trim your nails, and apply your favorite nail polish. Don't forget to moisturize your hands and feet for a spa-like finish.

Get Moving (a little bit)

With all the static relaxation you’ve been doing, it’s a great time to get the blood flowing a bit. We recommend a light, short (around 15-20 minute) yoga sequence designed to stretch your limbs and sink deeper into a mind-body connection. Yoga With Adriene on YouTube is an excellent channel with plenty of great sequences that fit this bill.

Relax and Unwind

The self-care isn’t over yet. After moving your body with a light yoga sequence, it’s a great time to revisit your chill and close out your spa day with mental and physical relaxation. This can be achieved with a simple savasana (corpse pose) for 10-15 minutes, or by curling up in your favorite seat with a book and cup of herbal tea. It’s a great idea to reflect on your spa day, meditate, and practice gratitude.

Revitalize and Hydrate

Don't forget to stay hydrated throughout your DIY spa day by sipping on water, in addition to any teas or other beverages you prepared. Consider preparing some healthy snacks or a nourishing meal to refuel your body after your day of relaxation.
